Prerequisites

This qualification is intended for experienced personnel working in the electrical industry.

Although City and Guilds does not state formal candidate entry requirements, the qualification is not intended for non-qualified electricians and/or those who do not have experience in inspecting, testing and certifying electrical installations.

Candidates should be time-served with previous experience of installing Electrotechnical Systems.

Candidates MUST be prepared for considerable study to stand any chance of passing the examinations.

Course Content

This Level 3 qualification helps you to develop the knowledge and practical skills required to professionally carry out initial verification and periodic inspection and testing on electrical installations.

This qualification aims at the specialist knowledge and skills you need, including appropriate legislation, inspection and testing techniques, completing and issuing certificates or reports and understanding of results and measurements.

Candidates will be provided with a copy of Guidance Note 3 and HSE Guidance GS38, but should also have a copy of the On Site Guide to BS7671.

Upon passing the online and written exams, East Coast College will arrange the practical assignments, at the College, on a mutually convenient date.

Course duration is five days tuition, plus one additional day for practical assessments.

 

Assessment

Assessment will be through a 2 hour open book multiple-choice on-line test and 3 practical tasks to include Visual photo exercise (30 minutes), inspection and test on the test rig and a short four item question paper. It would be expected that candidates have a basic knowledge and understanding of electrical science and principles and experience of electrical installation work either within the electrical contracting industry or an allied trade.

These consist of:

  • A copy of Guidance Note 3 (GN3) – 17th Edition
  • 2391-52 Course Notes

It is a requirement for the City & Guilds written exam that you are able to do calculations on basic electrical theory. Please make sure you are thoroughly familiar with this before coming on the course. Thank you.

It is essential that you bring with you the following items:

  • Your course information pack contained with this letter
  • A copy of The On Site Guide to BS 7671: 2008 (Amendment 1) IEE Wiring Regulations
  • Completed enrolment form.

If you wish to bring your own test equipment to use during the practical sessions, please feel free to do so. Please note that it must carry a current, valid calibration certificate.

Please be aware that there will be homework, such as past papers, to be worked on during the evenings of the course. The College can offer a limited amount of pre-course training if you feel you would benefit from this. Please contact Michele Able 01502 525033 for details.
